Macadamia

Location
Nambour, QLD

About
Some have said that the Big Macadamia is the poor cousin to the Big Pineapple, but we think that's giving it the rough end of the comparison. You'll find them both on the Sunshine Plantation, located on the Bruce Highway near Nambour, Queensland. The official address is The Nambour Connection Road, Woombye. Visit the Big Macadamia Nut, eat nuts, ride the Macadamia Nutmobile - go nuts! It's worth a side trip to the Sunshine Plantation where you can get two Big Things for the price of one (and it's free!).

Mandarin

Location
Mundubbera, QLD

About
Located 390 km north-west of Brisbane and 124 m above sea-level the small, relatively modern township of Mundubbera is situated on the Burnett River and claims to be the Citrus Capital of Queensland, a fact it reinforces by having a 'Big Mandarin' (known sometimes as the Enormous Ellendale) to greet visitors who approach the town from the coast. The Big Mandarin is an entirely appropriate symbol as the area around Mundubbera produces over one third of Queensland's citrus fruit and boasts the largest single citrus orchard in the Southern Hemisphere.

Marlin

Location
Cairns, QLD

About
We have the photo of the Big Marlin, but not the exact address. It is said to be near a shopping centre somewhere in Cairns, Queensland. Could it be near the Cairns Marina, where big game fishers have their trophies weighed? Give me a Big (fibreglass) Marlin anyday, and let the real ones swim free!

Marree Man

Location
Outback, SA

About
The Marree Man, is Australia's and the worlds biggest geoglyph, (a figure or symbol cut into the earth ). The figure is huge, about 4 kilometres (2 1/2 miles) from head to toe.The Marree Man was first publicised in 1998, soon after it was made. Who cut the figure and why remains a mystery, it is located in the outback of South Australia about 20 kilometres (13 miles) from the town of Marree. It is generally assumed to be a figure of an Australian Aboriginal hunter.

This picture of the "Marree Man" was produced from a Landsat 5 Thematic Mapper image acquired on 28 June, 1998 (WRS 99-80), using bands 1,4,7.

The area is an eroded plateau to the south and east of the dryland salt lake, Lake Eyre, about 600km north of Adelaide, South Australia. The terrain consists of sparse grassland overlying red soil. The nearest town is Marree, a small village roughly 20 km to the east.

The figure is about 4km tall and was made by scraping off the vegetation and exposing the underlying surface. Surveyors speculate that the figure was made by bulldozer using GPS measurements for control. So far, no one has assumed responsibility for the unusual artwork and, in spite of investigation, the artist(s) has never been found.

Due to its location, the figure was termed "Marree Man" by the press which gave wide coverage to the event at the time.

The geoglyph was fading fast in 1998 and may no longer be visible.

Merino

Location
Goulburn, NSW

About
The Big Merino stands (very proudly) 15 metres high and is a most tasteful replica of the type of sheep that populate the area. It's got to be one of the most famous Big Things in Australia. Don't be put off by the Goulburn bypass between Sydney and Canberra, take a detour to the Big Merino on Hume Street, Goulburn, and have your photo taken in front of this icon of Australian agricultural history, before it contracts foot-and-mouth disease.

Miner (Kapunda)

Location
Kapunda, SA

About
Map the Miner

The first sight to greet visitors to Kapunda is that of 'The Big Miner' which looms over the road into the town. This is a depiction of 'The Cornish Miner' who was instrumental in the development of this whole region. The plaque on the miner reads:

"THE CORNISH MINER. The Kapunda Mine. This statue is a monument to the profound, role and contribution of the Cornish miner in the Kapunda and in due course in other mines in South Australia. The Kapunda mine, established in 1844, was the first successful metal mine in Australia and contributed greatly to the economic development of South Australia. Up to its closure in 1878 ore to the value of more than £1 million was produced and up to 340 men and boys, mainly from Cornwall were employed.

"THE STATUE. The statue was named Map Kernow, being the Cornish dialect for 'Son of Cornwall'. It was unveiled on 5 June 1988. The sculptor was Ben Van Zetten who was commissioned."

About
Ahhh, what can one say about the original "Ozzie the Mozzie"? Built to celebrate the Hexham grey - the widespread grey mosquito Aedes alternans, the largest biting mosquito in Australia. That's right, come to Hexham and be bitten to death by these buggers. Work's for me. I've booked my visit already.

Murray Cod (Tocumwal)

Location
Tocumwal, NSW

About
Elizabeth McLaurin writes: The Murray Cod (or Fish if you are a local) has been living in Tocumwal since the mid 1960s - the first BIG THING in the country (I hope this doesn't spark a BIG debate). It was the brainchild of 3 women who raised the money for it through raffles, street stalls, dances etc. It had a major overhaul in 2000, due to a few bullet holes and cracked fins, plus all those years it was actually painted in Trout Cod colouring. It is now the real thing! It is 7 metres long, made of fibreglass with a steel frame, and is situated on the Foreshore Park next to the Murray River.
