Cassowary

Location
Mission Beach, QLD

About
Mission Beach is famous for the rare cassowary birds. But since they are so endanged, the only one you are likely to see is the big cassowary made of concrete in the centre of town. Which is probably a good thing as they have been known to attack backpackers for food.

Cheese

Location
Bodalla, NSW

About
The Big Cheese is in Bodalla, and is basically a water tank painted yellow (now quite faded) with ‘The Big Cheese’ written on it. It used to be outside the old Bodalla cheese factory, now closed down. It used to be a local co-operative, then it was bought out by Kraft or somebody. The gift shop was still open, barely, and very sad and run-down, and not very interesting.

Cigar

Location
Churchill, VIC

About
It is true that Churchill was named after the famous British wartime leader who was famous for his passionate speeches, his V for Victory finger sign and his penchant for cigars. Whether it was sensible for the local Rotary Club to build a huge cigar (someone rather rudely suggested it looked more like a fly killer that you hang from the ceiling) is a bit of a moot point. However, there it is as you enter the town - a celebration of the man after whom the town is named.

Cigarette

Location
Myrtleford, VIC

About
The 1930s and 1940s were hard times for the town but, after World War II, new methods and strains of tobacco were introduced and a Tobacco Research Station was established. Southern European migrants also settled in the area in the postwar years, involving themselves in the tobacco, hops and walnut industries.

Clock

Location
Murray Bridge, SA

About
The Big Clock, Palmer Rd, Murray Bridge SA 5253 Ph (08) 8532 4111

Keith is also known in the Murray Bridge area as the constructor of the “Big Clock” tourist attraction. This clock featured in a video that was shown at one of the ASTRO meetings and tells the time using basket balls! Unfortunately due to health reasons, the tourist attraction had to close and the clock now sits at the back of Keith’s house. The clock is for sale, so if any of you want to get into the tourist industry, call Keith.

Captain Cook

Location
Cairns, QLD

About
The Captain appears out of the undergrowth to point the way forward or backwards - we're not sure. Neither is he, as someone stole his big sextant. The only hint we have of his location is in this extract from Thea Astley: the Big Captain Cook "...standing mid-town like someone from a sheltered workshop, gazing forever wistfully south instead of north'. It is big, nevertheless. Go have a Captain Cook!
